Exterior Design 1966 Mustang Mach 1 Prototype №2 by Ford – The 1966 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Prototype №2 was a two-seater, sporting a chopped roof with the rear pillars featuring a flip-open race-style gas cap. Check out the flanks of this Mach 1 concept and will see larger-than-life air scoops. Running pony tri bar emblems grace the rear fenders. The sloped rear seen here featured a hatchback, a feature that wasn’t seen until the 1974 Mustang II.
The 1969 Mach 1 looked nothing like the concept shown here. The actual production Mach 1 came in “Sportsroof” only previously known as the “Fastback”. 1966 Mustang Mach 1 Prototype №2 was never offered in a convertible or coupe version, but many vintage Mustangs have been styled by their owners to look like the mighty Mach 1.
The production Mach 1 featured many visual cues that are not seen in the concept. For visual mods the hood was painted matte black and tied down with hood pins. It featured a hood scoop with an optional shaker scoop, complete suspension, pop-open chrome gas cap, revised wheels wrapped with white-letter Goodyear Polyglas tires, chrome exhaust tips (except on the 351W 2V), deluxe interior, optional chin spoiler, rear deck spoiler, and rear window louvers. The actual ’69 Mach 1 featured a 250 hp, 351 Windsor V-8 or a 335 hp, 428 Cobra Jet V-8 engine.
